LEGO Time Machine is missing a Back to the Future Part III option

Fans hoping to recreate all three versions of Marty McFly’s iconic DeLorean may feel short-changed when it comes to 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future.

The LEGO Speed Champions theme will be gaining yet another licensed movie build early next year, when 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future races into view on January 1, 2026. The 357-piece model is the latest LEGO iteration of the iconic vehicle from the 1980’s trilogy, one that offers up two different takes on the fan-favourite car.

However, while 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future can be assembled as either of the DeLoreans seen in the first two Universal movies, there’s sadly no option to recreate the vehicle that was introduced in Back to the Future Part III.

The closing chapter of the time travel trilogy saw the 1950’s version of Doc Brown modifying the car with then-current technology, in order to send Marty to 1885. The DeLorean was further enhanced in the Wild West with a new time circuit and train wheels, allowing the teenager to return to 1985.

While 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future does include such optional extras as a lightning rod, California number plate, hover conversion wheels, Mr Fusion and an orange number plate, the two-in-one LEGO Speed Champions set lacks any items required in order to achieve its BTTF Part III makeover.

That feels like something of slight a misfire for what looks to be an overall impressive set, especially when compared to 10300 Back to the Future Time Machine, which did come with those missing customisation elements.

The still available LEGO Icons model was released in 2022 and boasts white wall tyres and a brick-built hood-mounted circuit board, allowing fans to fully construct all three versions of the time-travelling DeLorean as they see fit.

If anything, 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future is more reminiscent of 21103 The DeLorean Time Machine, a set that also only offered up two versions of the movie vehicle, coincidentally at a similar scale to the upcoming LEGO Speed Champions build.

Although 77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future may be lacking everything it needs to be a truly complete trilogy model, some creative fans will no doubt be able to tweak the LEGO Speed Champions set once they get their hands on it, in order to match its signature Back to the Future Part III styling.

77256 Time Machine from Back to the Future will launch on January 1, 2026, priced at £22.99 in the UK, $27.99 in the US and €27.99 in Europe, and can be pre-ordered right now.
