8 things I wish I knew before starting LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight has proven to be a smash hit with players, but there are some aspects of the game I wish I’d known before starting.

TT Games has yet another bona fide hit on its hands with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, a title that condenses more than 80-years of Caped Crusader history into one immense immersive experience. While the video game continues to entertain players worldwide, there are some decidedly curious elements of the latest blocky interactive offering that weren’t highlighted ahead of its recent release.

Having completed LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight with 100% in less than 44 hours (thank you, thank you), here are eight key things about the latest TT Games title that I really wish I’d known before beginning the superhero saga. *Spoilers ahead*

LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight 5

1 – Story missions

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight includes 22 main story missions set across six distinct chapters. In each of those, Bruce Wayne or Batman is teamed up with a second predetermined character (such as Jim Gordon) and players can quickly switch between the two in order to complete a variety of tasks.

However, unlike previous TT Games LEGO titles, those characters remain the same every time you replay a previously completed mission. There’s no way of selecting any of the other five playable characters and utilising their skills, so those missions essentially remain the same each time you try them, thereby offering little replay value.

2 – Open world villain encounters

In the sprawling open world that is Gotham City, players will bump into a number of familiar super villains, but not quite in a manner in which they might be expecting. For instance, there are multiple Riddler and Cluemaster challenges to tackle, yet Batman never actually gets to meet the two rogues face-to-face.

Likewise, solving ‘The Case of Waylon Jones’ quest only leads to a quick fake tussle with the hulking former-foe-turned-friend, taking what could have been a potentially epic boss battle and turning it into a minor encounter.

3 – AR Trials

There are various AR Trials scattered throughout Gotham City, placed there by WayneTech ally, Lucius Fox. Those challenges include combat, traversal and driving tests set against the clock, with each trial rewarding players with a batch of shiny studs and sometimes unlockable outfits, vehicles and Batcave trophies.

The good news is that you’ll only need to hit the minimum bronze time ranking in each challenge in order to earn those goodies, so there’s no need to stress out trying over and again to obtain the gold high score in every AR Trial.

4 – Gold Bricks and Red Bricks

Speaking of ‘gold,' TT Games has played around with even more aspects of what you might be expecting to find in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight. For starters, Gold Bricks are now called Skill Bricks and there are only 30 of them to discover in the game, compared to the 1,200 Kyber Bricks in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

The majority of those Skill Bricks are rewarded for completing story missions and can be used to upgrade Combat and Exploration abilities as the game progresses. Enhancing each of those attributes can make fights much less of a challenge and even speed up travel around Gotham City.

Red Bricks have been tweaked in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight too, with a total of 24 in all to track down. Those are usually hidden in story mission levels and only have a purely cosmetic effect on costumes and vehicles, allowing players to change their colours, but not access traditional cheat options such as stud multipliers, Big Head mode or Minikit Detector.

5 – Minikits

Pre-launch trailers for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight flagged up the return of minikits, a familiar ingredient in many previous TT Games titles. This time around though, there are only 10 golden minikits scattered throughout the Batcave for players to locate and they serve a completely different purpose.

Instead of being a standard route to unlocking tiny brick-built versions of the game's vehicles, the Batcave minikits don’t reward gamers with any outfits or trophies at all and are merely required in order to obtain 100% completion of the game, which does feel like something of a letdown.

6 – Twitch drops

Also proving frustrating for players (myself included) are a series of promotional LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight Twitch drops that ran from May 19 to May 31. Gamers who tuned into specific streams on certain dates could get hold of multiple exclusive Batcave items such as a Neon Bat-Symbol, Gaming Chair, Drinks Fridge and more.

Of those, the DC Comics Twitch drops proved to be the most teeth-grinding, with only two meagre streams scheduled for the entire event, both of which took place at 11pm for UK players, resulting in many gamers missing out on those LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight goodies altogether.

7 – Exclusive HBO outfits

Also drawing the ire of players was the news that two exclusive LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight outfits would only be accessible in the game via an HBO subscription. Players could add The Dark Knight of Steel and Black Lantern costumes to their Batcave wardrobes, but only by signing up to the streaming service.

Unfortunately, HBO isn’t available in some territories (including Canada), leaving many LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight players with obvious blank slots in their outfit collections that may never be fully filled.

8 – 100% completion isn’t enough

Even if you manage to finish all missions and collect every item there is to discover in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, you still won’t have seen everything the game has to offer. For starters, inside the Batcave, is a wall display that’s slowly revealed as achievements are completed, resulting in a finished decoration that matches the now-retired 76271 Batman: The Animated Series Gotham City.

The second additional Batcave attraction is a giant robotic T. rex that can only be assembled by locating and collecting 50 tiny Bat-Symbols scattered around Gotham City. Those secret items don’t appear on the in-game map though, so you’ll need to search all of the islands from top to bottom or use a handy guide to find them all.

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight’s is available to purchase as a Standard Edition and Deluxe Edition on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam right now. The TT Games title will be launching on Switch 2 on September 18, alongside the upcoming Mayhem Collection DLC.
