The LEGO Group is reportedly gearing up to bring a beast of an off-roader to shelves in summer 2024, in the form of LEGO Technic 42177 Mercedes G500 4x4.
Filling a gap in the market left by the retirement of 42110 Land Rover Defender, the lean, mean, potentially-neon-yellow machine is said to be coming in at 2,891 pieces for $249.99 in the US. That’s according to Instagram user itavixbrix (via brick_clicker), who suggests that the LEGO Technic car will race on to shelves on August 1, 2024.
The G500 4x42 – as both the concept car and market version are known, and as the LEGO model may potentially be called if it does arrive as rumoured – debuted in 2017 in the US, with a price tag of roughly $200,000. You can watch Top Gear’s Chris Harris push one to its limits at the time below, in which he says the UK price is somewhere between £250,000 and £300,000 depending on spec.
That puts this monster of an off-roader – which started life as a special-edition version of the popular W-463 Mercedes-Benz G-Class – out of reach for most people, so a LEGO version is the next best thing. The real-life car combines a traditional Mercedes G-Class’s long-wheelbase with portal gear axles, superior ground clearance and larger wheels for better off-road proficiency.
Concept models (including the one Harris drove in 2017) were produced in ‘Electric Beam Yellow’, and it would be neat to see the LEGO Group choose that colour scheme for its own G500 4x42. It has just the hue for it, too – currently in use in LEGO City police sets, among others – so it doesn’t seem too much of a stretch. Just imagine all those neon yellow Technic panels.
While there are no further details on 42177 Mercedes G500 4x4 at the time of writing, its piece count puts it pretty close to 42110 Land Rover Defender, so it feels likely to scale well with that model. But its rumoured price tag puts it $50 higher than the 2019 model, for only 318 more pieces…
Check out the full LEGO Technic slate for 2024 below, but remember that any rumoured sets should be taken with the usual grain of salt until officially confirmed (or denied) by the LEGO Group.
