LEGO Pokémon GO promotion includes bonus SMART Tag

An upcoming promotion between LEGO Pokémon and Pokémon GO will allow fans to get their hands on an extra LEGO SMART Tag.

A whopping 15 LEGO Pokémon sets were officially revealed yesterday, with the majority of the new models incorporating some sort of LEGO SMART Play functionality. As well as the arrival of those builds, fans will be wanting to keep their eyes peeled for additional bonus items that will be available as part of an upcoming Pokémon GO promotion.

To celebrate the launch of the new LEGO Pokémon sets, select LEGO Stores in the UK, USA, Germany, France, Poland and Australia (the only six countries to receive the models to date) will be transformed into PokéStops and Gyms for players of Niantic's mobile game to unlock exclusive rewards, while stocks last.

The Pokémon GO promotion will run from August to September 2026, although there are no specific dates listed so far, and will offer fans the chance to grab special in-game and in-store rewards.

Those exclusive items include unique LEGO Pokémon digital backgrounds, LEGO Pokémon stickers and branded apparel in the app, as well as a LEGO SMART Tag. It’s not been revealed yet if the latter will be a physical item or free, but the chances are that could well be the case, especially considering how the LEGO SMART Play system works.

Adding LEGO SMART Tags to models allows those clever tiles to interact with LEGO SMART Bricks, triggering functions such as lights and sounds. For instance, placing any of the four LEGO SMART Tags included in 72164 Training House with Pikachu will activate a variety of reactions, such as when the yellow critter eats and hides.

If the LEGO SMART Tag that’s part of the Pokémon GO promotion is indeed a physical item, it may either be a new element that might interact with multiple LEGO Pokémon sets or simply be one that's taken from an upcoming 2026 model.

However, most modern mobile devices have built-in NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, so it’s possible that the Pokémon GO app might be able to generate its own virtual LEGO SMART Tag that would also do the same job.

LEGO SMART Tags and SMART Bricks have only been included in specific sets to date and are not currently available individually, so a physical freebie could be a chance for fans to add another of the pieces to their collections without spending any serious cash.

Of course, that’s purely speculative on our part at this stage, but we’ll know more about that LEGO SMART Tag once the upcoming Pokémon GO promotion rolls out later this year, alongside the new LEGO Pokémon releases.
