LEGO Star Wars 75440 AT-AT can stray further from starships

LEGO Star Wars 75440 AT-AT is one of the theme's latest releases, straying from the usual concept of the Starship collection, but it can stray further.

75440 AT-AT is now available, employing the same base design as the Starship collection in what can be considered an unusual entry into the range. Despite this difference, our review was full of praise for the build and the unique features that this scale allows for, balanced with the price.

The decision to use the black base keeps the overall appearance of 75440 AT-AT uniform with the Starship Collection, but it would do well to appear in another colour.

B_hawes on Reddit had the idea to expand the hidden white sections of the base to completely recolour the stand, now resembling the snow-covered surface of Hoth. There's even a small aspect of terrain, thanks to the wedge used to hold the stepping leg in the right position, which is usually coloured black.

The comments are mixed on the result, stating that the base isn't intended to be terrain, but a display stand. Despite this fact, the model is notably clean-looking and mixes nicely with the included Snowspeeder.

LEGO Star Wars 75440 AT-AT is already a major departure from the traditional Starship Collection builds, and changing the stand only makes it stray further from the path, which is not an inherently bad idea. Speaking to members of the LEGO Star Wars design team, Brick Fanatics was able to find out why the 2026 set is such a massive departure from tradition.

"The Starship Collection is just such a fantastic scale to work in. We can make these highly-detailed models that you can fit multiple of on a bookshelf, so they're really collectable," explained designer Jackson Hughes.

"They're really displayable in a lot of contexts. It was sort of a natural outgrowth of the concept, and why not do some of the iconic ground vehicles? So we decided to do an AT-AT because it's one of the most iconic ones, and it just works well at the scale. You can capture all of those details in a way that looks authentic and displayable, but fits the size."

LEGO Star Wars 75440 AT-AT is available now for £59.99 / $64.99 / €64.99, but you can pick it up at Zavvi for 10% off, as well.
