LEGO reveals three-year plan for child-centred digital well-being

Children’s well-being in digital play will be at the forefront of the next stage of a global initiative supported by the LEGO Foundation, LEGO Group and UNICEF.

The LEGO Foundation and the LEGO Group have announced a new three-year phase of the Responsible Innovation in Technology for Children (RITEC), an initiative aimed at making children’s well-being the key factor in digital game design and building a digital future where young minds can learn, create and thrive through play.

The launch of the latest phase of the program is led by UNICEF and funded by the LEGO Foundation, with the latter committing to investing $4.9 million in order to allow research to be translated into useful tools and guidance for developers to use going forward.

"The gaming industry reaches more children than almost any institution on Earth,” said Thomas Davin, Global Director, UNICEF Office of Innovation. RITEC is how we work together to make sure that reach becomes an opportunity – designing children's well-being into every experience, where it belongs.”

The initiative is aimed at increasing awareness across the digital game design industry, with the intention being to embed children’s well-being into development and promoting child-centred design principles across the global gaming sector.

"We believe that research should not stop at insight - it should shape how experiences are designed for children,” explained Joe Savage, Head of Impact & Evidence at the LEGO Foundation. “Through this new phase of RITEC, we are proud to support partners working to embed evidence-based approaches into digital play, so more children can benefit from safe, inclusive and meaningful experiences.”

The next phase of the RITEC process builds on three-year’s worth of previous research and development and will focus on aligning the approach of gaming industry leaders and decision-makers, translating research into practical tools and supporting the implementation of child-centred design principles across digital play environments.
