There’s a much more fitting source of energy powering LEGO Icons 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D than simple dilithium crystals.
The LEGO Icons theme will be charting a course to a new fan-favourite franchise next month, with the upcoming release of 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D – and builders who peer beneath the surface of the massive Federation vessel will discover that the starship’s internal workings include a very familiar source of energy hiding underneath.
Removing a section of 10356 USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D’s twin warp nacelles showcases that the craft is in fact powered by Octan, a familiar sight in many LEGO models over the years and one that most recently appeared to be doing the same job in 75419 Death Star.
The white, red and green canisters not only pop up inside the LEGO Star Trek vessel’s engines though. There’s also a small removable section just below the neck of the ship's stardrive, which can be taken out to reveal a tiny warp core made of 1x1 studs of the same colours.
Interestingly enough, the mini build is located roughly where the Enterprise D’s actual warp core is located in main engineering. As all Star Trek fans will know, the main reactor for the ship utilises a matter/antimatter reaction to generate power, mixing deuterium and antideuterium in a dilithium matrix to produce high-energy plasma. You learn something new every day.
It's always fun to see Octan popping up in all sorts of random models, with the LEGO energy source of choice having first appeared all the way back in 1992’s 6397 Gas N’ Wash Express and 6594 Gas Transit.
