LEGO Icons’ history of licensed sets might shine some light on the seemingly implausible rumours of an upcoming Dune set.
According to the most recent rumour from Promobricks, Dune is the next license to enter the world of LEGO with 10327 Ornithopter in November. Said to cost €164.99 with 1,327 pieces and include four or five minifigures, suffice it to say that this is a surprising property for a potential LEGO model.
As mentioned in our initial report, the various Dune movies are based on the Frank Herbert 1965 novel of the same name. Looking at the selection of properties currently covered in LEGO Icons sets, Dune isn’t as implausible as it appears.
Not including car manufacturers, clothing brands and football teams, the licenses in LEGO Icons sets so far include The Lord of the Rings, PAC-MAN, Queer Eye, Friends, Ghostbusters, Transformers, Atari games and Horizon Forbidden West.
Those all appeal to a mature, older audience, much like Dune. LEGO Icons is no stranger to these kinds of franchises, as suggested by the LEGO for Adults campaign that many of these models are included in. However, the recent introduction of The Lord of the Rings to LEGO Icons through 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell is a better example for Dune specifically.
The Lord of the Rings is a franchise that is based on a series of books by J.R.R. Tolkien that has been expanded into games and multiple big-budget movies, much like Dune.
The difference between Dune and The Lord of the Rings when it comes to LEGO Icons is that the latter franchise had a full LEGO theme prior to 10316 The Lord of the Rings: Rivendell. However, the rumoured 10327 Ornithopter would be the first LEGO Dune set. The topic of licensing is another discussion entirely, with Legendary Entertainment currently holding the film rights for Dune.
It’s still a franchise that the LEGO Group has never officially interacted with before and even the source advises caution for this rumour until official confirmation states otherwise. At the time of writing, 10327 Ornithopter is just a rumour and should be treated as such.
