Why LEGO Minecraft's most monochromatic set so far works

LEGO Minecraft is typically one of the most colourful themes on the market, but not with one 2026 set that surprisingly still works within the range.

21586 The Pale Garden is a major outlier in LEGO Minecraft's January 2026 wave. That's not in terms of price, or contents, but in the aesthetics on show through the colour scheme and creatures. It's nowhere near as colourful as any of the theme's early 2026 models, even those that integrate underground sections with plenty of grey stone.

21586 The Pale Garden tops those by expanding the hues of grey above ground, infecting the grass and plants with a monochromatic colour scheme, following the cues and concept for the in-game biome that inspired the set.

The stark difference in the aesthetic of 21586 The Pale Garden can be most clearly seen when directly comparing the box art for the 2026 set next to the rest of the wave. It's comparatively dull and monochromatic, but that's what will make this model stand out when it hits shelves next year. When a theme is as colourful as LEGO Minecraft, any deviation from the norm is more likely to be enticing and be visually prominent on store shelves.

It's a strategy that works in practice, with the lack of any major colours in 21586 The Pale Garden helping to set it apart, and it helps that the model is of a high quality, as shared in our review of the full wave. Whether intentional by the LEGO Minecraft team or not, this strategy of making the LEGO Pale Garden stand out so significantly compared to the rest of the theme echoes the intent of the in-game biome.

"We liked the idea of an infected forest, or some forest that wasn't exactly healthy," said Game Artist Sarah Boeving in an official video following the biome's announcement. "It's supposed to feel like it's dying and it's dormant. It doesn't feel quite right compared to some of the other biomes."

This dead and dormant nature explains the colour scheme of the Pale Garden, and its corresponding 2026 set, though it doesn't quite cover why the exclusive Creaking figure is so lopsided compared to the many other buildable Minecraft figures. Thankfully, a later part of the video shed some light on this subject.

"I think with the Creaking, the big thing that I kept in mind is that I wanted it to imitate a tree, and that I wanted to create a mob that was asymmetrical," Sarah continued. "I tried varying the number of eyes, I tried giving it hair at some point, tried all kinds of weird poses and stuff for it and generally was trying to make it look different."

Ultimately, these efforts from the Minecraft development team have created an area of the game that truly stands out from the crowd, so much so that the music will be silenced when you walk into the biome. It only makes sense that the LEGO set is just as starkly different, and that's what makes it work so well within the wider LEGO Minecraft range.

LEGO Minecraft 21586 The Pale Garden launches on January 1, 2026, for £17.99 / $19.99 / €19.99, alongside seven other 2026 sets for the theme. Click here for some tips on where to use the wave's new pieces and prints outside of LEGO Minecraft.
