The LEGO Group is taking the Harry Potter theme in a brand new direction for 2021, with a gloriously bizarre pair of oversized, brick-built minifigures.
Four years into the renewed Wizarding World theme, someone in Billund has clearly looked at the portfolio and decided (to paraphrase Barney Gumble): “LEGO Harry Potter is in danger of growing stale. I’m taking it to strange new places.”
In this case, that strange new place is
They’re styled on the characters’ appearances in the first batch of LEGO Harry Potter sets from 2018, as per the first two movies, but – for some reason – have full-sized legs rather than the minifigures’ short legs. Harry also gets a custom cloth robe piece, which the LEGO Group still hasn’t figured out a way to bring to regular minifigures.
Perhaps what’s most puzzling about this 1,673-piece set, however, is the character selection. Why do we only have two thirds of the franchise’s main trio? If there was only budget for two buildable characters, why not pair Harry with Voldemort, or even Dumbledore?
We’re also surprised to see it’s only marked 10+ rather than 18+, given it’s basically a display model. But who knows: maybe this set will find its audience among Harry Potter fans, and open the door to many more brick-built minifigures in future – and potentially across other themes.
