LEGO Star Wars’ new AT-RT is more accurate than you might expect

Empire has published a brand new image of The Mandalorian & Grogu’s AT-RT, offering the best point of comparison yet for its upcoming LEGO Star Wars set…

75444 AT-RT Attack debuts April 26 for £39.99 / $44.99 / €44.99, and – if you can believe it – marks the entry-level set for Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu at the time of writing (BrickHeadz notwithstanding). For that money you’re getting minifigures of Din Djarin, Grogu and an Imperial Remnant AT-RT Driver, along with AT-RT and turret builds. But how well does the walker itself compare to the source material?

It’s a question we can better answer now thanks to Empire’s latest preview image of the next Star Wars movie, which gives us a better look at Din Djarin perched atop an AT-RT walker. And the most obvious point of contention between LEGO set and movie is – as is pretty much always the case for this vehicle in LEGO – its scale. The LEGO set is bigger than it should be in proportion to the minifigure, although arguably not by much.

Previous LEGO AT-RTs have spanned various colour schemes, particularly in Clone Wars sets (most recently in yellow in 75431 327th Star Corps Clone Troopers Battle Pack), but this one gets the Star Wars special: grey, grey and a hint of grey. That’s seemingly in lockstep with the movie and the walker’s Imperial livery, so no complaints there, even if it makes for a comparatively drab LEGO Star Wars set.

You can also see plenty of details have been faithfully captured in the LEGO version, from the triple exhausts (or whatever they are) and antenna behind the seat to the Imperial emblem and lights, both represented by stickers. The stud shooters are obviously oversized to a pretty substantial degree, but that’s an easy swap if you’re not bothered about losing the functionality.

The shaping around the front of the walker isn’t bad, but it’s a bit gappier than you’d perhaps hope for, and it might have been interesting to see a 2x2 triangular tile deployed up top instead of the curved 1x2 slope. It’s tough to be too critical given the scale of the walker, though – not least because a more accurately-scaled version would potentially have an even tougher time with shaping.

Beyond just the size, the biggest compromise evident in 75444 AT-RT Attack is the posture of the LEGO vehicle. The AT-RT on screen feels closer to the AT-ST, with the legs jutting out behind the seat. In the LEGO set, the top section of each leg sits directly underneath Din Djarin – presumably to account for pesky things like gravity, ensuring the set is stable enough for both play and display.

All told, though, this LEGO Star Wars set is a better match than you might at first expect for its source material, and suggests the design team had access to relevant and comprehensive reference material in plenty of time. We’ve seen AT-RTs before, but the little details recreated here give 75444 AT-RT Attack a unique Mandalorian & Grogu flavour.

Unfortunately, it’s a flavour that’s going to cost you come April: with only 297 pieces in the box, this looks like one of the worst-value LEGO Star Wars sets in a long while. No small feat…
