LEGO One Piece's flagship set serves up a treat in 75640 The Baratie Floating Restaurant, which finds the recipe for success with a Pirates-adjacent build.
Netflix's take on the iconic Baratie is substantially different to the anime or manga series, forgoing the blue and circular design in favour of a more grounded series of stacked ships. The LEGO designers have taken the brief of recreating the live-action restaurant in their stride, pairing the grandeur and elegant detailing of the location with exclusive minifigures of fan-favourite characters.

It will be difficult for the most dedicated fans of the One Piece anime to ignore the stark differences in this version of the Baratie, which features a much more grounded design. Still, since the rest of the theme is based on the live-action adaptation, this wouldn't have been within the LEGO Group's control, and what has been designed is excellent from start to finish.
The outside of this model plays with scale to make the huge Baratie structure more affordable as a LEGO set. From the way that it manages to maintain the fish head as an outside bar to a ship-spanning rooftop deck for patrons to relax on,
The interior continues this scale and level of detail well, complete with the main, multi-level dining room, a kitchen, an office, a treasure room up top and more to explore, stretching across the full footprint of the build, even if it means those details are harder to spot deeper in the build. The main dining room is the biggest area, and one issue we have with this set is that there's not quite enough seating in here. There may be enough room for every one of the set's minifigures, but including more tables would have presented this as a great area to display other pirate minifigures, even those from outside of the One Piece universe.
It's not hard to amend this with elements you have at home, but it's also something the designers could have included for the price of £269.99 / $329.99 / €299.99. The dining area is functional, at least, adding a spinning feature to the booths to make it easier to pose minifigures inside, before turning them back to their proper position.
Just to the left of the dining area is a decently-sized kitchen, able to comfortably fit three minifigures to prepare meals for the hungry patrons. The area leading into this space demonstrates how the LEGO designers have made the best use of every inch of
The kitchen itself is well-stocked with food and has an intricate floor that's especially fun to put together, and there's even an additional rack of utensils hidden in the stern of the Baratie. Combining these two areas with the outdoor bar in the fish head reveals just how prepared the ground level of
Up the curved staircase in the dining hall is the upper level of the dining area, complete with some fun graphics for fans of the franchise to admire. These are some of the set's many stickers, but none of them are challenging to apply. The randomised collectable posters are wonderfully designed, as well as printed, and it's going to be hard resisting the temptation to collect them all.
Zeff's office may look simple, but inside the cabinet is an ingenious build that keeps this side of the ship's exterior attached to the main structure. We won't spoil how this is done as it's something best seen for yourself. There are a few more tables up on this level, making the most of the room available, and a staircase allows minifigures to visit the rooftop deck with some loungers to relax in. It's a level of logic we usually only see in the Modular Buildings Collection, allowing minifigures to realistically climb the structure – but only to this point.
You'll need to use your imagination to get minifigures up to the small treasure room at the top of the Baratie, as this area of the ship is at a different scale. The row of tables showcasing various artefacts is notably smaller than any other, and even the ladders are nearly too small for a minifigure to climb. It gels well with the scaling showcased on the exterior to demonstrate that the spaces are getting smaller the higher up the Baratie goes, and the fact that minifigures can't logically access this area further anchors the change in scale.
One clear highlight of
Zoro's new element for this three-sword style allows an additional sword to clip on to a minifigure's neck. This is an incredibly specific element, but with some excellent execution that rounds out each one of his minifigures across LEGO One Piece.
The exclusive minifigures of Zeff, Garp, Helmeppo and Koby are excellent as well, and though they're not rife with a high level of detail, there is a new piece for Zeff's facial hair. The appeal here isn't about the level of detail, though; it's that you can find these fan-favourite characters as LEGO minifigures, even if they are walled off behind the theme's most expensive set (to date).
Still, gathering them all in one place instantly increases the appeal of
Mihawk comes equipped with his iconic huge blade, as well as his coffin-shaped ship. This is an excellent minifigure that perfectly captures both the anime and live-action depictions of the character. The sword can be sheathed on his back, and when you pair this minifigure with the ship, it's an effective inclusion that properly completes the character's minifigure.
Zoro and Mihawk can even recreate their action-packed duel outside of the Baratie using one of the set's few play features. It's integrated effectively into the display model and gives the entire package a little extra interactivity.
It's not quite an essential LEGO One Piece set in the same way as
LEGO One Piece 75640 The Baratie Floating Restaurant size comparison
The extended pier entrance works effectively with the LEGO One Piece ship, almost as if the two were made for each other. It's a commendable effort from the designers, working perfectly alongside the essential LEGO One Piece set while finding the balance that avoids either build being overshadowed by the other.
Our honest opinion: 75640 The Baratie Floating Restaurant is the ultimate build for LEGO One Piece fans and good value, but it's not as essential a purchase as the Going Merry.
