New LEGO Minecraft 2025 sets may not be what fans were expecting

Some LEGO Minecraft fans may well have had a slight shock to the system following the recent reveal of two new sets based on A Minecraft Movie.

Two LEGO Minecraft models spinning out of the upcoming A Minecraft Movie were revealed yesterday. 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring and 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack are both due to launch on March 1, ahead of the film hitting big screens around the world on April 4.

While the announcement of new LEGO Minecraft sets might not be that unusual, fans expecting more of the same from the theme may have been in for a slight shock to the system. The pair of builds have their own take on Mojang’s smash hit blocky video game, one that may prove to be divisive among collectors.

For starters, 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring and 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack each include normal human minifigures (based on the cast of A Minecraft Movie), alongside more traditional block-headed denizens of the Overworld.

That means we’re looking at the first-ever Jack Black minifigure, portraying Minecraft’s main character, Steve, and Jason Momoa’s former video game champion, Garrett. The look of the human characters contrasts sharply with the mob minifigures, although to be fair that visual difference is also reflected in the trailer for A Minecraft Movie.

Speaking of mobs, new printing on the zombie, villager, piglins and baby zombie minifigures swaps out standard blocky faces, with hyper detailed expressions replacing the usual grid-based expressions.

Likewise, 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack’s iron golem has a more animated look on its face than fans may be used to, although what appears to be a new printed chest piece may prove to be a sweetener.

There are also some odd things going on scale-wise with the upcoming LEGO Minecraft sets. For starters, 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring comes with a massively-oversized chicken jockey for its baby zombie to ride on, with the latter also being much larger than previous versions of the tiny mob.

Then there’s 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack’s ghast balloon, the biggest brick-built version of the Nether-based mob to date. Again though, that look is determined by A Minecraft Movie, with the trailer revealing that ghasts are used by piglin hordes as a form of air transport that includes a basket slung below.

You’ll be able to judge for yourself whether the new LEGO Minecraft sets are a triumph when both builds release on March 1, 2025. 21272 Woodland Mansion Fighting Ring will be priced at £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99 for 491 pieces, while 21273 The Ghast Balloon Village Attack will launch for £59.99 / $69.99 / €79.99 with 555 pieces.
