A new Mario Kart game announced today is packed with all kinds of fresh content that could prove inspiring for future LEGO Super Mario sets.
Nintendo officially announced a June 5, 2025 release date for its Switch 2 console today, complete with a so-so line-up of launch titles. However, one eagerly-awaited video game arriving on the same day will be Mario Kart World, a sprawling update on the hugely-successful racing series, complete with all sorts of exciting new features.
That could ultimately be prove to be good news for LEGO Super Mario fans too, with the theme only just starting to dip its toes into the brick-built racing world. A first handful of Mario Kart sets arrived earlier this year, soon to be followed by
If the LEGO Super Mario design team is looking for even more inspiration for potential future models though, Mario Kart World could be the way to go. We got our first look today at the upcoming video game in an official trailer, with the title including the usual Grand Prix mode alongside Knockout Tour and Free Roam modes, all of which can host up to 24 players.
Mario Kart World will boast switchable outfits for drivers, allowing characters to change their look on the fly, with some of the clothing options being suitably over-the-top fashion choices.
New karts also make an appearance in Mario Kart World, ranging from a small 1UP standard kart, bikes and boats to snowmobiles and plane-like gliders, plus grinding on rails with two wheels seems to be a new play mechanic.
In addition, fresh power-ups take things to the next level, such as a question mark block that transforms players’ rides into giant-sized versions of their chosen character and vehicle. There are also new selectable driver characters appearing in the game including Pauline, Stingby and even a cow from Moo Moo Meadows.
All of the above could potentially be great source material for possible future LEGO Super Mario sets in the years to come, but we’ll have to wait and see what the video game theme has planned for the rest of 2025 first.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be released on June 5, 2025 for £395.99, with pre-orders starting April 8. In addition, a bundle including the console and Mario Kart World will also be available on launch day for £429.99.
