The LEGO Group's latest collaboration with Mercedes-AMG Petronas was unveiled at the Japanese Grand Prix this weekend, but some reactions were more mocking than impressed.
A life-sized Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 W14 E Performance made up of 192,937 bricks was unveiled at the Japanese Grand Prix at the Suzuka Circuit this weekend, making it the third version of the car to be made from bricks this year, hot on the heels of March releases, 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance and 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back. While the build itself is undoubtedly impressive, unveiled and on display at the GP, some fans took the opportunity to share their opinions on Mercedes's Formula 1 performance so far.
Mercedes is currently P4 in the Constructors Championship for 2024, 35 points behind McLaren in P3. With a recent history of dominating both Constructors and Drivers Championships until Redbull consistently started taking the top spots, Mercedes has had a difficult few years in terms of performance, culminating in Lewis Hamilton recently announcing a move to Ferrari for 2025.
This poor performance has left the Formula 1 team open to mockery and criticism on social media – and many are using the images of the brick-built version of the car to do it.
"So is the porpoising better or worse on this model?" commented one person on X, while another added: "Probably more aerodynamic than the W15."
When Mercedes unveiled the car in full, alongside close-ups of some of the finer details, more comments flooded in, such as: "I guess the speed is also as accurate as original."
Unfortunately, Mercedes didn't prove fans wrong in the most recent grand prix in Japan, scoring P7 and P8 between drivers George Russell and Lewis Hamilton respectively. Nonetheless, it's hard to deny that the life-sized car looks impressive, complete with a colourful steering wheel.
While you sadly can't get your hands on the massive build, you can buy 42171 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance and 42165 Mercedes-AMG F1 W14 E Performance Pull-Back for £189.99 / $219.99 / €219.99 and £20.99 / $26.99 / €26.99 respectively. Plus, Zavvi has some tempting early discounts on both sets in the UK, bringing the prices down to just £184.99 and £18.99.
