LEGO Fortnite 77071 Supply Llama review

LEGO Fortnite's iconic 77071 Supply Llama is full of surprises and supplies, encompassing an exciting in-game moment in a pleasing package.

Stumbling upon a Supply Llama in any of Fortnite’s modes is an exciting opportunity for players. They’ll often be filled with useful gear that may come in clutch later in the match or help you survive the wilderness in LEGO Fortnite. Whatever your experience with them, know that this colourful item is an icon of Fortnite and has remained as such over the past six years.  

The start of the LEGO Fortnite theme wouldn’t be complete without a brick-built llama piñata, and the LEGO designers have approached this model with a sense of familiarity mixed with some experimentation, drawing on previous brick-built piñatas to determine what needed to be done differently this time.

A brick-built gaming icon

77071 Supply Llama fits right in alongside the rest of the October 2024 LEGO Fortnite sets, representing the version of the animal as it appears within the Battle Royale mode, but filled with loot from LEGO Fortnite. Adding to the depth of this set, some of the items within the llama build have appeared within both modes. 77071 Supply Llama is likely not intended to represent any singular mode, but the idea of the in-game item.

The build is suitably colourful with an adequate level of detail that can be repetitive to construct, but gives the final model ample texture. It does mean that the finished product isn't as big as you may expect from its 691 pieces thanks to the numerous slope elements used to create this texture, so even though it's worth it in the end, don't let the element total raise your expectations too high.

A combination of hinges and studs on their side make up the iconic shape of the Supply Llama effectively, recreating this gaming icon for any Fortnite enthusiast to proudly display. It's more expensive than the similar 77070 Durrr Burger, but it's also more iconic. That said, you'll probably end up picking one or the other to display in the end depending on your budget. There's no need for both but the option of choice is always appreciated.

No smashing, only grabbing

Unlike 40644 Piñata, 77071 Supply Llama does not break apart by design. Unless you are specifically aiming to destroy this model, there's only one way to get at the goodies inside. Like the item in-game, 77071 Supply Llama is meant to be searched for gear, not broken apart. This is achieved by undoing a simple pair of locks on either side of the llama, just below the inscription of the chest.

Just as you'll find in Fortnite, the items will quickly spill out of the llama as soon as you unlock it, adding an element of chaos to the experience. Though the pool of items remains the same, you can recreate the randomness of the llama by only opening one side of 77071 Supply Llama to see what you get. Whether this is intentional by the designers is unclear, but it adds to the playfulness of this model.

You can restock the llama with the included gear by opening a hatch at the top of the set and overall, this feature is well-hidden, useful and enjoyable. It's a level of functionality that you simply won't find in 77070 Durrr Burger and contributes to the value of the build. The gear you'll find inside 77071 Supply Llama should be familiar too.

Gear up

Every item in 77071 Supply Llama is taken specifically from LEGO Fortnite, including a Grappler, a Slurp Juice, a Rough Ruby, a Back Pack, a Good Luck Charm, two Slap Juice and a Dynamite. While some of these items appear in other Fortnite modes and 77073 Battle Bus, the inspiration here is clearly taken from the survival crafting experience, but note that the likes of the Grappler and the Slurp Juice also appear in Battle Royale.

The mix of gear offered is strikingly odd as some accessories can be used by minifigures while others are materials, and one only appears when a player is eliminated. That latter item is the Back Pack, which appears on the ground containing your inventory after you perish in the wild. How this ended up in a Supply Llama is up for debate but it's a charming build for a backpack that could be modified to fit on a minifigure's back too. 

Those planning to grab 77073 Battle Bus will already have enough accessories to adorn all nine minifigures, but 77071 Supply Llama expands your options with many handheld items. In this sense, 77071 Supply Llama is a great expansion to an existing LEGO Fortnite collection – but on its own, the accessories won't find much use beyond demonstrating the main play feature, which means it struggles slightly as a standalone set unless you only intend to display the gaming icon. Including a couple of minifigures would have alleviated this, but they're all limited to 77073 Battle Bus at the time of writing. 

77071 Supply Llama launches on October 1 with 691 pieces for £34.99 / $39.99 / €39.99 and there's no denying that there's great value to be had based on the number of parts. Though many of those pieces are small, their quantity still helps this set achieve a level of value that few models at this price range can manage, consequently increasing the diversity of the LEGO Fortnite range. Add to that the free digital bonus and it's a strong contender for a first-choice LEGO Fortnite set this October.
