LEGO The Endurance's cloth sails call back to ship builds of yesteryear

LEGO The Endurance's cloth sails call back to ship builds of yesteryear

The 10 fabric sails included with 10335 The Endurance are a nod to a number of classic LEGO ships that have been released over the years.

The LEGO Group officially revealed 10335 The Endurance today, with the model setting sail on November 29, priced at £229.99 / $269.99 / €269.99. In addition, those who plan to buy the build from that date until December 2 will also be eligible for a free 40729 Shackleton’s Lifeboat GWP.

Included in the list of impressive details that 10335 The Endurance boasts are its 10 fabric sails, which hark back to a bygone nautical era. Those in turn are attached to the ship’s three tall masts, which also feature intricate rigging and a cloth flag.

In an age of LEGO sets often utilising foil elements for the likes of 76296 New Captain America Construction Figure’s wings, it’s reassuring then that 10335 The Endurance’s sails opt for a much more traditional approach.

Numerous LEGO vessels have incorporated fabric elements over the years, with such pieces adding a sense of authenticity to ship-themed builds. For instance, the now-retired 21322 Pirates of Barracuda Bay used similar elements that could be rolled or unfurled as required, which in turn added to the play potential of the set.

That particular LEGO Ideas set stands in stark contrast to 31109 Pirate Ship, a model that went with brick-built white sails instead, ultimately losing something unique in the building process. Tattered fabric sails were also put to great use in 71042 Silent Mary, a LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean set that recreated a wrecked skeleton vessel seen in the fifth film in the Disney series.

Going back even further along the LEGO Group’s timeline reveals such gems as 6285 Black Seas Barracuda (1989), 6286 Skull’s Eye Schooner (1993), 6289 Red Beard Runner (1996), 10210 Imperial Flagship (2010) and 70413 The Brick Bounty (2015).

10335 The Endurance continues the LEGO Group’s appreciation of how brick-built ships should be constructed, with fabric sails just being one of many authentic details the LEGO Icons design team has managed to incorporate into the build.

10335 The Endurance will be released on November 29 for £229.99 / $269.99 / €269.99, with all purchases between November 29 and December 2 also receiving a free 40729 Shackleton’s Lifeboat GWP (while stocks last).
