A series of new Secrets of the Sets videos has revealed multiple sketch and concept models for the LEGO Editions Football Highlights collection.
All four LEGO Editions Football Highlights minifigure dioramas are now available. To mark the occasion, the LEGO Group has released one new Secrets of the Sets video for each of the models. These feature various members of the LEGO Editions design team discussing the development journey for these new sets, and how the input of the footballers and their teams changed the builds.
As part of these videos, sketch models for all four sets have been revealed for the first time. Read on, and we'll run through each of the draft builds one by one, detailing what changed from pitch to product.
43011 Lionel Messi – Football Highlights

The sketch model for 43011 Lionel Messi – Football Highlights is much smaller than the final set, yet still includes his name at the front. The coloured houses representing the clubs he has played for have remained practically unchanged, but shifted position.
The action line on the base of the build has also been flipped, as has much of the rest of the model. The numbers at the back were originally much smaller, too, featuring a more rounded design. This is the case across the draft models for all four sets, representing a shift in the overall aesthetic.
43012 Cristiano Ronaldo – Football Highlights

There was only one sketch model showcased for 43012 Cristiano Ronaldo, with a similarly small footprint compared to the final set. Notably, this one features the printed tile with statistics for the player, unlike most of the other sketch models. It suggests that this particular set was designed later in development, when those tiles were finalised.

Similar to the Messi model, much of the layout remained the same between the sketch model and the final set. The overall footprint was expanded, and the wording at the front was made smaller so as not to block the minifigure.
43013 Kylian Mbappé – Football Highlights

43013 Kylian Mbappé – Football Highlights received the most in-depth look of the four sets, featuring three sketch models to admire, including one seemingly from the very start of development.
That build is pictured above, featuring a more explorative concept than the rest and a design that doesn't fully align with the LEGO Editions Football Highlights range. It helped to refine the various aspects that would need to be featured in the final model, though, such as the Arc de Triomphe.
Two more sketch models were showcased, too. These include a more familiar duo of builds, but with huge changes between them. The rounded letters were moved from either side of the Arc de Triomphe to above it, and a gold chicken was added to the left of the build. The latter is sadly not present in the final set.

We can much more clearly see the journey that this LEGO Editions set went on and the various modifications that were made to get to the final design.
43027 Vini Jr. – Football Highlights

43027 Vini Jr. – Football Highlights rounds out the lot with two sketch models. The first, pictured above, is from earlier in development and has a flat, V-shaped base. This was soon modified to feature the SNOT-integrating base to be in line with the other LEGO Editions sets.
Otherwise, there are few major changes to note with the layout and inclusions on the base. The biggest changes concern the minifigure itself. The trail behind it was originally depicted with simple plates and bricks, but was eventually changed to just focus on the feet, like smoke.
It also has a space for the printed tile, suggesting that it was also designed later than a couple of the other Football Highlights sets. All four of these new LEGO Editions models are available now, with one exclusive minifigure each, for £24.99 / $29.99 / €29.99.
