The LEGO Group confirmed why two of the LEGO Speed Champions Formula 1 sets have a different age ranking to the rest of the wave.
Eagle-eyed LEGO fans will likely have spotted that 77243 Oracle Red Bull Racing RB20 F1 Race Car and 77246 Visa Cash App RB VCARB 01 F1 Race Car have 18+ labels, rather than 10+ like the rest of the wave and the wider theme. When we got to speak to LEGO Design Lead Dan Meehan at the launch event for the sets, he clarified why that is.
"That's because of the sponsor logos on those sets and that's the only reason," responded Dan. "It's not a building complexity issue."
Chief Product & Marketing Officer Julia Goldin went into more detail on the decision in another interview with Brick Fanatics, saying: "It's because Red Bull as a product, from a legal perspective, is only available for 18+. We wanted to reflect that because obviously we also have kids buying Speed Champions products."
Good news for those who might have been worried that two of the LEGO Speed Champions sets are significantly more difficult than the others. It's not the only brand-driven decision for these Formula 1 sets, with 10330 McLaren MP4/4 & Ayrton Senna opting to replace the classic Marlboro branding with a simple 'McLaren' tile.
Clearly, mature brands won't stop the LEGO Group from partnering with Formula 1 teams but the designers will instead find neat ways to sidestep issues where they need to, or keep sets for older builders where they need to. After all, it would be pretty difficult to design a Red Bull Formula 1 car without any mention of Red Bull itself.
