LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feature familiar brick-built Batmobiles, many of which had to be scaled down to fit in the game.
LEGO Batmobiles have come in all shapes and sizes over the last 19 years, but these different scales presented the team at TT Games with a challenge when developing the new LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight game. They weren't able to directly reuse existing set designs due to the differences in scale, and in order to create an immersive LEGO experience, some modifications were required.
"Obviously, a lot of the different Batmobile sets are at a different scale, so they have to be rebuilt or reworked to fit a scale that's going to be consistent in-game," said TT Games’ Executive Producer Matt Ellison to LEGO Fan Media.
When looking at the design of the original LEGO The Batman Batmobile compared to the new
“The scale was kind of dictated by the wheels and the arches over the wheels,” explained the set’s designer, Mark Stafford, in a recent interview. “We didn't have elements that were bigger than this that we could make the wheel arches with, so going to a larger scale wouldn't really have worked.”
The Batmobile was still desired for the new game, though, leaving TT Games with the task of taking both the official set design and the car itself and scaling them down to be minifigure-sized. This meant close collaboration with the LEGO Group to ensure that the new build was still meeting the high design standards.
"So that is something that we do go through a process of working with the LEGO Group on to make sure that the design language is kept the same, so we ask if the LEGO designer were to redo that set at this scale, like, what would they do?" detailed Ellison. "And we work with them very closely on that and make sure that they're happy that what we're putting in the game is what they would do if they were to do that."
Whether this means a minifigure-scale Batman Forever Batmobile is in our future, as one member of the Brick Fanatics team is hoping, or not, it's an interesting level of insight into how the digital LEGO models in games have to be designed. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight launches next year, and the trio of Batmobile sets that unlock content in-game launch on March 1, 2026.
