Most of the pieces in
The shaping of the pegasus is fantastic but relatively simple and it makes for a fun build. The horse and wings are two separate builds but work wonderfully together – at least in appearance. Functionally, the wings are loosely attached and are extremely prone to falling off. Because of the claws latching on to the body, they won't fall too far but it's annoying having to attach them as the build gives way under its weight.
The details on the horse use stickers apart from the eyes, but these are not necessary at all and can be left off while still achieving the same effect. The inclusion of a design on the flank is especially interesting – like a nightmarish brand left by the Nightmare King.
The pegasus isn't easy to pose as it struggles to balance, but with a bit of patience you can figure something out. Thankfully, it looks good enough in its neutral position and is the perfect size to hold and play with.
Aside from the pegasus, this set includes a living cage, a throne and a bird transporting Zoey into battle. While the cage and the throne are both meant to feature a printed eye tile, one of these was missing from our review copy – but these mistakes happen, and the LEGO Group will no doubt be quick to send out a spare once the sets have launched, so we're not holding it against anyone.
Anyway, these builds aren't nearly as memorable or appealing as the pegasus, but do add to the play value of the set and each one feels like a worthy inclusion.
Unfortunately, the bird is the only item that can be rebuilt and it doesn't take long to transform it into a pair of butterfly wings for Zoey. It's a bit disappointing compared to other LEGO DREAMZzz sets and this could have been an opportunity to explore alternate builds for the Nightmare King's army instead.
Admittedly, this set would have been a great opportunity for Zian – Zoey's companion in the series – who has a similar colour scheme to this bird, but this might have raised the price considering their size.

The crowned hood and shadow cape with haunting silhouettes are excellent and combined with the rest of the minifigure, this character selection is nothing short of a must-have – thanks in no small part to the Nightmare King.
