Closer look at everything new in LEGO Icons 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine

Take a closer look at all the new parts and prints in the newly-revealed LEGO Icons 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine, including the inventor’s debut minifigure.

10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine joins the LEGO Icons line-up on January 1, serving up one of the 18+ theme’s smallest and most affordable sets (that isn’t a plant or flower) to date at only 493 pieces for £54.99 / $49.99 / €59.99. While we’ve still got a few days to go until the review embargo on early copies lifts, New Elementary has published images of everything new in the historical ornithopter.

That includes a 2x2 tile printed with one of da Vinci’s schematics for his ornithopter (he sketched up more than 500 in total, or more than the total piece count for 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine), and a handful of parts making debuts in new colours. The curved bar with a 1x1 plate at one end and an axle at the other, typically used in trans-clear for posing superhero minifigures, comes in brown here for the first time.

“My favourite recolour is the steam pump,” LEGO designer Antica Bracanov told New Elementary, referring to the Technic shock absorber that’s been in use (in some form) since at least 1980, and debuts in brown and tan in this set. “I mean, we wanted to keep it Renaissance, you know? We also have strings for the first time in dark tan. We wanted to have a proper rope colour – jute, or whatever this rope is made from.”

The recoloured string will likely find plenty of uses beyond 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine, but much more specific to this set is the first-ever Leonardo da Vinci minifigure. This appears to use new pieces for the torso and legs, while borrowing the white hair and beard elements commonly used for Albus Dumbledore. It’s unclear yet whether the head is brand new, but it at least sidesteps the same head repurposed for historical minifigures such as Jules Verne and Gustave Eiffel.

Finally, the plaque tile that reads 'Leonardo Da Vinci's Flying Machine' (incorrectly capitalising 'Da') is thankfully printed rather than a sticker. You'll be able to check out all these pieces in person when 10363 Leonardo da Vinci’s Flying Machine flies on to shelves on January 1, 2025.
