LEGO Marvel 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure review

While coming in as the most expensive LEGO Marvel construction figure to date, 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure is also surprisingly the most impressive.

The LEGO Marvel and DC construction figures released to date have all had a bit of an uphill struggle. Translating the look of fan-favourite comic book and big screen characters into posable brick-built versions has been a little hit and miss, more often than not resulting in blocky forms that fail to do their original source material justice.

Although primarily aimed at a younger target audience for play (rather than display) purposes, there’s yet to be a LEGO construction figure that’s truly managed to successfully marry form with function.

However, that could all be about to change with the launch of 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure. The posable character makes its debut with the set, based on Norman Osborn’s twisted super villain as portrayed by Willem Dafoe in 2002’s Spider-Man and most recently Spider-Man: No Way Home.

With a number of LEGO Marvel construction figures released so far, it’s perhaps surprising that 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure is only the second brick-built supervillain character we’ve received to date.

Following in the symbiotic footsteps of the now-retired 76230 Venom Figure, Osborn’s menacing Goblin represents a shockingly effective interpretation of Spidey’s arch nemesis, one that comes complete with two pumpkin bombs and an impressively lethal glider to ride on.

76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure’s assembly follows the tried-and-tested pattern of every other similar set, kicking off with a torso, legs, arms and then helmeted head. The Goblin’s spiky green and almost Power Ranger-like armour translates really well into brick-built form, with tiny tiles and even shield elements being used to great effect, plus clawed hands for clutching the included weapons.

Ball and socket joints snap into place easily enough and provide 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure with plenty of stability for both play and display. One particularly impressive new element included with the build is the Goblin’s faceplate, a moulded and printed piece that perfectly captures the menace of the character and shines with almost pearlescent gold highlights on the eyes and teeth.

The helmet itself features a long tapered rear section as seen in the movies, as well as green pointed ears of a slightly different hue and a chin piece to hold everything in place. 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure does have a decent range of movement, although the issue of shoulder pieces not being attached to the character’s arms proves to be the now-standard complaint with these LEGO sets.

The articulated character can be placed on the Goblin glider in a number of poses and it has to be said that the vehicle is quite vicious in appearance. With a printed fan piece, flaming exhausts and four sword pieces for front blades, the glider effectively adds even more of a threat to what is already a very sinister character. The pumpkin bombs can also be stored at the rear of the vehicle when not being handled by the Goblin, so you shouldn’t really lose the accessories.

Placing the Goblin on the glider also gives the character more height, making it taller than other buildable figures when stood upright. The completed 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure proves to be the perfect addition to the ever-expanding sub-theme and pairs perfectly with 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure, released the same day.

As is usual with these sets, 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure only features the brick-built version of Osborn’s villainous alter ego. You won’t find any exclusive minifigure included, with the only extras being the character’s two pumpkin bombs and signature glider.

Despite 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure being the most expensive buildable LEGO Marvel character released to date, the set’s £31.99 / $34.99 / €37.99 price is reflected in its higher than usual piece count. You’re getting a mighty 471 elements here, enough to build both the Goblin and his glider.

There are only two printed pieces included with the model (and thankfully no stickers to be applied) with the highlight being the character’s mask. This element gives the villain’s face a distinctive 3D quality and combined with the exclusive printed expression really manages to fully capture the terror of the crazed villain.

In a sub-theme of often odd-looking interpretations of familiar characters, 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure is the stand-out release so far. The villain’s bold green armour and lethal glider translate very well into brick-built form and Osborn’s alter ego successfully matches its on-screen appearances.

There’s also enough playability and poseability in the LEGO Marvel set to appeal to a much wider audience than previous similar releases. When paired with 76298 Iron Spider-Man Construction Figure you’ll also be able to re-enact a number of dynamic movie scenes and epic MCU battles.

The increased price point for 76284 Green Goblin Construction Figure may make it slightly too pricey for some, but the addition of the extra pieces for the character’s glider really do prove to be the icing on the cake of a very satisfying supervillain build.
